Transport drivers from Wollongong’s SCE have banded together again this year to raise funds for the Illawarra community in the 14th annual I98 Illawarra Convoy.
“Each year SCE employees have part of their wage put aside each week to donate to the Convoy cause,” said Paul Minogue, SCE’s Transport Operations Manager.
While the company matches employee contributions dollar for dollar, drivers also volunteer their time to clean the trucks in their own time and participate in the Convoy.
“It’s a real family affair with many family members only too happy to get involved riding along and sometimes being seconded to do the cleaning,” Minogue said.
An estimated 750 trucks and close to 1100 bikes took part in this year’s Convoy and thousands line the streets of the Illawarra to watch the annual spectacle.
“SCE appreciates the work these drivers do to represent the company in such a big event in the Illawarra,” Minogue said.
“We especially appreciate the good work the Convoy team does to raise so much money for charity.”
While this year’s final fundraising tally is yet to be announced, during the last 13 years almost $11.5 million has been raised in the Illawarra community to help local people, particularly those with seriously ill children.
