Hebden feels like home for Mal

Hebden Quarries Sales Manager Mal Kirwan has always been fascinated by quarry operations. Despite strong concrete product and construction industry experience, Mal says he couldn't help being a little envious of the guys producing rock before joining SCE. No wonder he was in a chirpy mood when we caught up with him at his beloved quarry.

Can you tell us little about your role?

Sharing the love among my customers is a challenging gig but I have a lot of love to give. My role is to instill confidence in our customers mind that Hebden Quarries can deliver a premium product on time and at a reasonable rate.

That sounds like a lot of fun…

The Hebden and Mayfield team are best described as colourful (laughs) but hats off to a family owned company that has several successful operations in these interesting and challenging times.

What’s the most enjoyable aspect of your job?

Besides Friday afternoon you mean (LOL)? Of course, it’s the team we work with and the wins we have when you receive a purchase order from a satisfied customer. And seeing the big rocks!

And the least?

Besides Monday morning you mean (LOL)? The times when machinery breaks down or you must let a customer know we are unable to service their requirements due to circumstances outside of our control.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

For approximately 15 years, I modified normal street cars and designed and built higher performance engines to participate in drag racing events in Sydney and Brisbane. I am proud to say that I won more races than I lost and had a fantastic time being involved in Motorsport. And did it all on the budget equal to a weeks’ worth of groceries at Aldi!

What do you do in your spare time?

I’m currently at the pointy end of completing an investment property build project in Newcastle. When I need some time out and the lawns, washing and housework has been done, I get to sneak the jet ski out of the garage and slip over to Lake Macquarie, Newcastle Harbour, Port Stephens or the Hunter River. I do my best not to get thrown off the side of the 1.5lt supercharged machine.

Finally, if you weren't so damn good at your job, what would you be doing?

I’d like to head north and try the beach bum life, maybe.
