The extra string in SCE's bow

Later this month a spectacular 58 piece ensemble will form when Steel City Strings, sponsored by SCE, is joined by the Bluescope Youth Orchestra to perform the Celebration of Youth concert series.

Created to support and foster exceptional young, local classical musicians, the series will visit Kiama, Wollongong and Burradoo.

Performing chamber orchestra suites and dances by Purcell, Boyce, Grieg and Piazzolla, Celebration of Youth features award-winning soloists and composers ranging from 15 to 21 years of age.

Steel City Strings' Artistic Director and Concert Master, Kyle Little said:
“These concerts provide our selected award-winning young musicians with a truly unique opportunity to develop their soloist potential through working with our own professional chamber orchestra.”

Wollongong born and raised, Cedar-Rose Newman is the 15-year-old violin soloist playing Camille Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. In 2016 she was invited to study in the USA and can now count among her many awards from Australia and overseas, the 2019 Kate Bamberger Memorial Scholarship from the Manhattan School of Music.

“The invitation is very special because the series allows me to perform the work three times, in three different venues. An unusual opportunity for someone my age”

Bassoonist, Peter Lavilles, was winner of the 2018 Wollongong Conservatorium Concerto Competition. Also 15, Peter is the feature soloist for Carl Maria von Weber’s Bassoon Concerto in F major.

The combined 58 piece orchestra is excited to perform the world premiere of 21-year-old composer Adrian Whitehall’s piece Absence of Light. Adrian, whose music has been performed by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, composed this piece specifically for the Celebration of Youth series.

And hot on the heels of their successful performance in the Cantabile Music Festival at Sydney Opera House in 2018, popular singer/songwriters Emma Snellgrove and Caitlin Schlenker will get feet tapping with their original song Capsized.
