Curing consists of keeping moisture within the concrete and maintaining the concrete at a suitable temperature.

This should be done during the early stages following the forming and finishing of the concrete.

This process allows the water in the concrete to react with the cement to form the compounds needed for strength and durability.

How to cure (keeping in the moisture):

  • by covering with water eg. slabs, floors;
  • by covering with plastic sheeting eg. slabs, columns;
  • by using spray on curing compounds eg. slabs, paving;
  • by leaving formwork in place eg. columns (timber formwork only).
