The Client
Our client owns and operates an established open-cut mine located in the Hunter Valley region of NSW, producing both semi-soft and thermal coal which is transported to the Port of Newcastle for sale into the export market. Like SCE, the client is also committed to minimising the potential impacts of industry on people and the local environment.
The Challenge
The coal mine was looking for help to develop a material that would prolong the life of a light vehicle access road around the circumference of the Run of Mine (ROM) coal pad.
This road is used to keep the light vehicles separated from heavy vehicle interactions on the ROM. This is a site safety initiative. Also the mining industry was looking for a material which could keep vehicles moving during the wet and reduce road maintenance times.
The Solution
Gravel Grip40 a road pavement material incorporating natural and recycled materials to form a lightly bound self-healing, all weather pavement.
Gravel Grip40 has, increased the life cycle, reduced dust emissions and increased the productivity of the mine by limiting down times.
The material has been used in various combinations with top size material from 40mm for typical live loads associated with light vehicles and road trucks to 60mm for the heavy mine site machinery.
By also working together across our own supply chain we were able to design an end-to-end transport solution to deliver the product more efficiently and safely, direct from our sites to the ROM pads and light vehicle access roads.
The Result
- Significantly reduced the waste and disposal cost for our customer.
- Turned more than 20,000 tonnes of an industrial by-product per year into a sustainable end of life innovative pavement material.
- Saving our client hundreds of hours in downtime and reduced the amount of scheduled maintenance on the road.
